Crews have started clearing a 3.5-acre parcel of land just north of Target on Alderwood Mall Parkway. It’s the start of a long-awaited project to build two new hotels. Furniture too close to a heater sparks house fire

Investigators say a fire that heavily damaged a house at 198th and Damson Road was started by furniture too close to a heater. The fire broke out in the small house around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. No one was home at the time. Crews from Lynnwood and Fire Districts 1 and 7 had the flames out in about 20 minutes. The house is considered a total loss, with damage estimated at $50,000. Apartment fire sends one person to the hospital

A fire at an apartment complex in the 4900 block of 168th Street SW caused $160,000 in damage. The fire broke out in the kitchen of a unit Tuesday at 12:48 p.m. Dozens of crews, including four engines, responded to the scene. The entire unit sustained heat and smoke damage. Ken Gibler, a firefighter with Fire District 1, is retiring after 34 years of service. A native of Edmonds, Gibler grew up going to the fire station with his father, who was a volunteer with Fire District 1.
