Architects selected for new Lynndale Elementary and Alderwood Middle schools

Architects have been selected for the new Lynndale Elementary and Alderwood Middle schools.

The Edmonds School District Board of Directors approved the selection of Mahlum Architects for Lynndale and Integrus Architecture for Alderwood.

Voters approved funding for the new Lynndale and Alderwood schools last February.

Mahlum Architects designed the Cedar Valley K-8, the Alternative Learning Center and a number of other smaller projects for the Edmonds School District. The firm also has worked on numerous elementary projects in Washington and Oregon.

The design concept and budget for Alderwood is based on the District’s recent Meadowdale Middle School project. District staff recommended Integrus Architecture, the architect for Meadowdale Middle School, for further consideration.

Integrus committed to giving the District the same personnel who completed the Meadowdale Middle School project. In addition to Meadowdale Middle School, Integrus has worked on Meadowdale High School, Terrace Park K-8, the Educational Services Center and other smaller projects for the District. The firm developed the design of the District Support Center.

The Capital Projects Office now will work with Mahlum and Integrus to develop a detailed scope of work and contract for educational specifications, site master planning and preliminary design. The contracts will be submitted to the Board.

The current Alderwood Middle School was constructed as junior high school in 1966 and modernized in 1988. Lynndale Elementary was constructed in 1957 and modernized in 1988.

The District plans to construct the new Alderwood Middle School on the undeveloped portion of the Martha Lake School site near Larch Road and 172nd Street in unincorporated Snohomish County. The school will remain in operation at the existing site until the new facility is available.

The new Lynndale Elementary will be built on the same site as the existing school. The existing site is too small and constrained to allow the school easily to remain in operation while a new facility is constructed. The District is considering a number of options for providing an interim facility so the school can move out and the existing Lynndale site can be worked on.

The District plans to open both schools in September 2017.
