City planning to update wetland regulations

The Lynnwood City Council is scheduled Monday to consider a contract with Environmental Science Associates (ESA), for technical support and assistance in understanding, drafting, and updating the City’s current wetland regulations, as well as updating its base maps identifying potential regulated critical areas.

The Washington State Department of Ecology updated the Washington State Wetland Rating Systems for western Washington. The City of Lynnwood is required to adopt and use this new rating system.

While undertaking this required update, the City will also be evaluating other critical areas regulations for their adequacy. These sections include:

  • Geologically hazardous areas
  • Aquifer recharge areas
  • Variance procedures
  • Critical areas base mapping in GIS

This undertaking will include a public outreach effort, including public hearings with the Planning Commission and City Council later in 2015 prior to adoption.

In other scheduled business:

– Proceeds from the Lynnwood Parks & Recreation Foundation’s Par 4 Kids Golf Tournament will be presented to the City for the Recreation Benefit Fund.

– The City Council will join in on proclamations honoring the Randy Terlicker Memorial Scholarship Fund and National Wear Red Day.

Twelve lifeguard training class scholarships will be awarded to youths, ages 15-20 this year, in honor of Terlicker, a former Lynnwood Aquatics Supervisor known as the “Gentle Giant,” who perished while serving in the line of duty as a Seattle Firefighter in 1995.

National Wear Red Day seeks to increase women’s awareness about heart disease and to empower them to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease.

Monday’s City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood.
