An annual tradition since 2001, the Edmonds School District on Wednesday night threw a banquet to honor the multi-sport graduating senior athletes who also are outstanding scholars, and also provided awards to coaches and community members from each school who support district athletes and athletic programs.
A total of 17 students — four athletes from each of the district’s high schools that have interscholastic athletic programs, plus one student athletic trainer — received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 each.
And the winners announced Tuesday were:
Lynnwood High School
Community member: Gayleen Gott, Booster Club volunteer
Coach: Everett Edwards, girls basketball
Athletes:
Arsenia Ivanov, volleyball/basketball/tennis, Washington State University, communications, $4,000
Isabella Maza, basketball/golf, University of Washington, physical therapy, $1,500
Ryan McArthur, cross country/basketball/track and field, Western Washington University, kinesiology, $2,500
Soren Steelquist, basketball/soccer, University of San Francisco, business or history
Bryce Landers (trainer), basketball/baseball, Whitworth University, $1,000
Meadowdale High School
Community members: Kathy Coffey and Lisa Hummel, co-presidents of the school’s booster club

Community member: Ron Phillips, who has served as treasurer for the Edmonds-Woodway Athletic Booster Club for the past three years.

Jack Griffing, cross country/track and field, attending Idaho State University to study civil engineering, $1,500.
Alex Hull, football/basketball/baseball, University of Washington or Tacoma CC (baseball scholarship) with plan to major in dentistry, $1,000
Lauren Nguyen, softball/swim, Bowdoin College, pre-medicine, $2,500
Emily Storino, soccer/basketball/tennis, Central Washington University, business, $1,000
In addition, District Athletic Director Julie Stroncek recognized Dr. Jim Hsu with the Director’s Award, for his “countless hours of volunteer service as the team doctor for all four of our high school football teams.” A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Hsu has been giving up his Friday nights each fall since 2005, making himself available on the sidelines of all Edmond District stadium games, she added.
