Edmonds-based after-school steel band organization Steel Magic Northwest has opened its registration for Fall 2017 youth and adult steel band classes.

The organization is beginning its second year. During its inaugural year, students gave a dozen performances, including Edmonds Concerts in the Park, Shoreline Arts Festival, Taste of Edmonds, and special concerts at Lynndale Elementary, Maplewood School, and Meadowdale Middle School. Steel Magic Northwest also co-sponsored the “Youth Steelband Summit” at MoPOP, and their own Edmonds Waterfront Steelband Festival, which included the Edmonds district’s Summer Music School steel bands.

“As a new organization, our first year was quite challenging,” said Executive and Artistic Director Gary Gibson, an internationally-known steel band specialist. “But it was very fun and productive, and it laid a solid foundation for our growth and ability to contribute to the arts and social fabric of Edmonds and its surrounding communities.”

Gibson characterizes Steel Magic Northwest as a youth development program, modeled on several of the more than 200 programs he has visited nationally as concert artist and clinician. The organization also has an evening adult group.

Registration is now open on their website, www.steelmagicnorthwest.org for youth 5th grade through 12th grade, and adults. The organization offers a sliding scale and tuition assistance to families whose children are on reduced-price or free lunch programs in school.
