Letter to the editor: Support Fire District 1 levy on general election ballot

Dear Editor:

I urge voters to support Fire District 1’s Proposition 1 on the general election ballot. It will help the fire district to hire, train and equip more firefighters.

Calls for service have increased more than 12 percent in 2016. As the chairman of the Fire District 1 Board of Commissioners, I can assure you that more firefighters are needed to keep response times down as call volumes increase.

Fire District 1 innovates with community paramedics, fall prevention programs, and natural disaster preparedness.

Proposition 1 asks voters in the unincorporated area of Fire District 1 to reauthorize the fire levy at the same rate that was approved by voters in 2008: $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value, or $675 annually for a $450,000 property. It is not a new tax.

Please help Fire District 1 to help you, and vote yes on Proposition 1!

Sincerely,
Jim McGaughey
