The City of Lynnwood didn’t have to look far to find a new Finance Director.

During a special business meeting on Monday, the City Council approved the hiring of Sonja Springer, who currently is the Finance Director of the City of Mountlake Terrace.

Springer has been at Mountlake Terrace for 15 years and prior to that she was a Budget Manager for Seattle City Light for 14 years.

“I’m really looking forward to starting here in the City of Lynnwood,” said Springer, who after attending Monday’s Mountlake Terrace City Council meeting made an appearance at Lynnwood’s City Council meeting where she was formally introduced by Mayor Nicola Smith. “You have a fantastic city, lots of opportunities and I’m looking forward to improving your reporting.”

Springer said she plans on working to have Lynnwood’s budget submitted for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) award.

Last year, Mountlake Terrace received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for CAFR. It was the seventh year in a row that the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has recognized Mountlake Terrace for its CAFR. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

Mountlake Terrace was one of only three cities in Snohomish County and one of only 36 cities in Washington State to receive a certificate. Furthermore, Mountlake Terrace was only one of two cities in Snohomish County and one of 20 cities statewide to receive certificates for both the CAFR and the Distinguished Budget Award from GFOA. Only about 5 percent of cities nationwide receive the award.

Springer’s first day at her new job in Lynnwood will be June 15.
