The City of Lynnwood announced Monday that the first meeting of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 at City Hall 19100 44th Ave. W.

The Diversity, Equity and lnclusion Commission serves as an advisory body to the City with the mission of helping create a safe, welcoming and equitable community for all.

According to the City of Lynnwood, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission will focus their work on identifying barriers that community members face when accessing city services and programs, proactively facilitating the building of trusting relationships with under-served and underrepresented communities, and providing advice on being a “welcoming city” and a “cohesive community that respects all,” as defined by the city’s Community Vision.

The new commission was officially created in January. The process to create the commission began after a recommendation was issued by an outside consultant in August 2016. The new ordinances were first presented to council in December 2016.

The Neighborhoods and Demographic Diversity Commission had stopped meeting in April 2016.

During the first meeting, the Commission will adopt bylaws and set a regular meeting schedule. All meetings are open to the public.
