Meadowdale could nearly taste a state playoff berth with three minutes left in regulation, but Shorewood’s offensive attack finally broke through in the 77th minute and again in double overtime to end the Mavericks’ season Saturday evening at Edmonds Stadium.

Senior forward Sven Pandel, a Shorewood senior and German exchange student, scored on a close-in header from the left side to send the Thunderbirds to state with about two minutes left in the second overtime. A corner kick set up the play, and after a Shorewood teammate got the intital header, Pandel converted.

“It was perfectly on my head,” Pandel said.

Meadowdale led 1-0 for most of the 3A District 1 playoff game, with the third and final state playoff berth on the line, but Shorewood kept coming and attacking.

Finally, late in regulation the Thunderbirds broke through to force overtime.

Shorewood sophomore center midfielder Garrett Miyaoka scored on a header on the right side of the goal on a set play off a corner kick in the 77th minute to give the Thunderbirds new life.

Shorewood out shot Meadowdale 10-3 but missed several excellent chances including several shots at a nearly open goal. It was a nearly an entire game of frustration and near misses for Shorewood, and timely Meadowdale defense.

For example, Shorewood forward Mahmoud Santo hit the crossbar on a solid shot in the 47th minute, but yet again, the Thunderbirds would fall short, and Meadowdale kept its lead.

The Mavericks led for about 42 minutes of the game, based mostly on its ability to get stops in the penalty box and clear the ball when necessary.

Meadowdale capitalized on one of its few scoring chances in the first half, when senior midfielder Stuart Smith punched a shot into the left side of the net in the 35th minute.

Smith ran on to a ball from senior James Parks, who lofted the cross from nearly 30 yards out on the opposite side of the field.

Meadowdale’s defense bent but did not break in the first half. The Mavericks allowed five shots, but thanks to some luck, defense and good goalkeeping by junior Luke Lindgren they were able to keep Shorewood off the scoreboard.

Lindgren finished with four saves.

Meadowdale wrapped up its season with a 12-4-4 record.
