A 12U softball team coached by a Lynnwood family won the 2016 NSA Washington State Title.
The team is based in Puyallup with girls (birth years 2003-2004) coming from all over including Shelton, Lacy, Bothell, Auburn, Seattle, Federal Way and Mercer Island. The team is coached by husband and wife Angela and Wiley Morgan of Lynnwood, assistant coach Brian Hering (not pictured), and the Morgan’s daughter, volunteer assistant coach Maddie Morgan, a Lynwood HS softball player and University of Alabama softball commit.
The tournament took place in the Tri Cities from June 24-26.
The NSA State tournament was straight bracket play. The WA Ladyhawks beat NW Speed 04 (8-4) in their Friday night game, Saturday they beat WA Patriots 03 (5-1) to remain in the winner’s bracket, they beat NW Speed 03 (2-0) Sunday morning and then waited to face the winner of the losers bracket for the championship. NW Speed 03 emerged from the losers bracket in a lose and done or win twice scenario. The tournament is double elimination and WA Ladyhawks went into the first game undefeated. The game went into extra innings, with the WA Ladyhawks winning 8-7 in the bottom of the 8th with a steal at home to score the winning run.
32 teams competed in the 12B pool, 11 teams in the 12A pool. Elite Diamonds took 3rd place. The team has been invited to play a scrimmage vs Elite Diamonds in Husky Stadium July 22 and will end their season with the ASA Western Nationals tournament.
