WSDOT is making changes that will hopefully ease some of the frequent backups on the 164th Street SW off-ramp from southbound I-5.

Crews will be modifying the ramp to allow right turns from the center lane. Right now drivers can only turn right from the far right lane, which often leads to congestion on the ramp. As part of the project, they will rebuild the traffic island, replace a signal, install guardrail and make other improvements.

The work will require some nighttime lane and ramp closures this week:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday, June 1 and 2: The southbound I-5 off-ramp to 164th Street SW will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers will follow a signed detour using southbound I-5, 196th Street SW and northbound I-5.
  • Thursday, June 3: The right lane of eastbound or westbound 164th Street SW and the off-ramp will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers will follow a signed detour using southbound I-5, 196th Street SW and northbound I-5.

Construction is expected to wrap up in August.
