The Washington State Department of Transportation just produced this video about the project on southbound I-5 near 196th Street SW. It gives you a better idea of how the new “braided ramp” is expected to ease congestion at this busy interchange.

I don’t think it’s entirely true that traffic will not be affected during the Christmas shopping season. The loss of a merging lane from southbound 525 to southbound I-5 is already causing quite a backup during busy times. It will only get worse during the height of the shopping season.
In order to avoid that ramp, traffic will have to take the Alderwood Mall exit off of 525, and that will adversely impact all the roads to the north of Alderwood Mall.
