Sign up for the annual National Night Out block parties

Last year, 12-year-old Rita Sakharov tried out Officer Frazer Kennedy's motorcycle.

Now’s the time to register your neighborhood for National Night Out, an annual event aimed at bringing neighbors together to fight crime.

This year’s event takes place Tuesday, Aug. 7.

“By involving several households in each neighborhood, it becomes a real community building effort and everyone shares in the expense and fun of putting on a block party,” said Shannon Sessions, police spokesperson. “Statistics prove over and over that neighbors knowing one another and watching out for each other reduces crime.”

The idea is to strengthen community and police partnerships and to send a message that neighbors are fighting back against crime. Typically police, fire, city council or other representatives visit each block party.

Last year, more than 35 million people in thousands of communities across the country participated.

To register your neighborhood, call the Lynnwood Police Crime Prevention Unit at 425-670-5635.
