A two-alarm fire at an apartment complex near Martha Lake left ten people without a home Sunday morning.
It all started about 10:20 a.m. in the three-story building at the Millwood Estates Apartments in the 16600 block of 6th Ave. West.
Officials said heavy smoke was coming from the second and third floors when firefighters arrived. The fire was spreading into the attic so they called for a second alarm. Lynnwood, Fire District 1 and Fire District 7 all responded to the scene.
One resident was treated for a minor injury after he tried to enter a second-floor apartment because he thought someone was trapped inside. A Fire District 1 spokesperson said he broke out a window and used a fire extinguisher, but quickly realized the fire was too intense to enter.
No other injuries were reported.
It appears the fire started in a second-floor unit, then spread to a third-floor unit and into the attic before firefighters got control of the flames. Those two apartments were heavily damaged by the fire. Two other apartments had smoke damage and two more on the first floor had water damage.
The Red Cross is helping the 10 displaced residents. Most of them did not have renter’s insurance.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is still looking for the cause. Damage is estimated at $200,000.
