The Lynnwood Arts Commission and the City of Lynnwood are partnering with Indigo Real Estate Services, Inc. and CG Engineering to commission a Public Art element that will be sited on the prominent 196th St. SW. and 36th Ave. W. intersection in Lynnwood’s City Center.
This is an open call to artists living in Washington and Oregon. Applications are due by 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10. Three finalists will be selected to furnish project proposals in October. Artist selection will be announced in December (dates are subject to change) with project installation to be completed by February 2017. CityCenter Apartments is a 347-unit affordable housing project located across from the Lynnwood Convention Center. The site is located at the intersection of 196th St. SW. and 37th Ave. W., adjacent to the I-5 south on-ramp (signed as 36th Ave. W.). This intersection has been designated a “Community Gateway” by the City of Lynnwood and as such there are certain design requirements for the intersection corner and the building. In addition to architectural, hardscape and landscape features, the developer has chosen to allocate funds for the creation and installation of public art at the Gateway Plaza to enhance the public plaza and provide visual interest.
The project has been designed to be transit-dependent with low parking ratios proposed. Included in this design are many pedestrian-friendly elements, including a plaza at the Gateway corner and a plaza adjacent to the sidewalk for the full length of the building’s frontage on 196th St. SW. There is also a pedestrian connection through the site from 196th St. SW. to Alderwood Mall Boulevard, which leads to the Lynnwood Transit Center. Increased pedestrian traffic is anticipated with the adjacent construction of a 150-room hotel and increased transit service planned with bus rapid transit on 196th St. SW, and light rail service at the Lynnwood Transit Center.
The Gateway Plaza is adjacent to the ground floor amenities available in the building. Immediately adjacent to the plaza is the exercise room, which has high ceilings and large windows looking out over the plaza. The lobby entrance is located just west of the Gateway Plaza. A little further west along 196th St. SW. are large windows to the pool and spa. The Gateway Plaza is bordered on the south, east, and north sides by landscape buffers, to prevent pedestrians from accessing the onramp. A crosswalk across 196th St. SW, connects the Gateway Plaza to the Convention Center and north towards Alderwood mall. The developer, CityCenter Partners, is partnering with the City of Lynnwood’s Arts Commission for the artist selection for this project.
