The student councils of all Edmonds School District high schools are sponsoring a talent show this Thursday, April 21 to benefit Megan Brookins, an Edmonds-Woodway High School sophomore diagnosed last November with stage two cervical cancer. Admission for the show — to be held at the Mountlake Terrace Theater at 7 p.m. — is $5 and all proceeds will be used to offset Megan’s medical expenses.

Megan, who has been out of school since she was diagnosed, played second base on the E-W junior varsity softball team last year as a freshman. Megan’s mom, Marie Brookins, said that this year, the girls on the JV team are wearing Megan’s number — 14 — on their helmets. The family also suffered another medical challenge in late March when Megan’s father, Jeff, suffered a heart attack.  “He’s doing okay, but he’s on short-term disability and is scheduled for cardio rehab to get him ready to go back to work,” Marie Brookins said.

Since being diagnosed, Meagan has undergone surgery plus radiation to shrink the tumor and also had chemotherapy. She will undergo additional surgery next week, followed by more chemo.

“We’ve been hit a bit hard, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground and laughing as much as possible,” Marie said. “We are surrounded by a wonderful network of friends and family and I’m so amazingly grateful for that.”
