What exactly is a ‘braided ramp’?

If you’ve driven on I-5 in Lynnwood lately, you’ve undoubtedly noticed all the construction activity. WSDOT is building what’s known as a “braided ramp.”

The new ramp from SR 525 and I-405 to southbound I-5 will be elevated over a new off-ramp to 196th Street SW. From above, it looks like a braid. The idea is to separate merging traffic to improve safety and ease congestion.

WSDOT just created this animation to give you a better idea:

  1. Ahhh I get it. I have been wondering about this every time I drive through this area and since we have been reading about the “braided ramps”. It does seem like it will be safer and easier to navigate. Thanks for the good info, Mike.
