ChildStrive receives Gates Foundation grant

Will you chip in to support our nonprofit newsroom with a donation today? Yes, I want to support Lynnwood Today!

MyNNNThe Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has stepped up in a big way to help promote success for homeless children and their families in Snohomish County with a recent grant of $25,000 awarded to ChildStrive, a local non-profit organization with a Lynnwood site.

When families find themselves facing challenges such as homelessness and poverty children are at an increased risk for developmental delays. ChildStrive is trying to break the cycle through their Parents as Teachers (PAT) program.

The PAT programserves children who reside in homeless shelters with their families. They are at high risk for developmental delays and of not succeeding in school. As a result of participating in this program, children will be better prepared to succeed in school. They will exhibit increased literacy and language skills and improved social and emotional skills. Their parents and caregivers will have a better understanding of how to facilitate their child’s social, emotional and literacy development.

“We are grateful to the Gates Foundation for their support for this important program.  Our Pat program is the local only one in the state targeting families who are struggling with homelessness”, said Terry Clark, Executive Director, ChildStrive.
