College Place Elementary students ‘Fall in Love with Reading’

Students, families and teachers celebrated College Place Elementary School’s fourth annual Fall in Love with Reading event Thursday to promote reading.

The event invites students and their families to participate in games and activities that promote literacy and encourage reading at home, said reading teacher Carrie Garrett.

“We make it a fun night for everyone to come together and learn about reading and enjoy reading,” she said.

Dressed in costumes in anticipation for Halloween, students rotated between classrooms featuring games, coloring stations and a story time with guest readers. The event’s most popular games was the Book Walk — a mix between a raffle and musical chairs where students walk on numbered labels to music and when the music stops the student standing on the number called won a free book.

The event coincides with the Scholastic Book Fair and after the fun and games, students enjoyed a piece of pumpkin pie.
