Construction begins on 52nd Avenue project

MyNNNConstruction to widen 52nd Avenue West between 148th Street and the Lynnwood city limits is currently underway. Road closures will begin Monday, July 8.

One lane of 52nd Avenue West. will close around the clock until early October; the remaining lane will be open to local, one-way northbound traffic only. Local detours will be posted. Drivers and residents can expect construction Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents who live along 52nd Avenue West are asked to remove any obstructions (plants, decorative items, etc.) from the staked right-of-way zone prior to construction on July 8.

The road currently has two travel lanes and intermittent sidewalks. The new design calls for widening the roadway to add bike lanes, sidewalks, curbs and gutters along both sides of the roadway and a center turn lane. There will also be planting strips at several locations. Stormwater detention and water quality treatment systems will be constructed, as well as retaining walls where appropriate adjacent to wetland areas.

This is a continuation of improvements that began on Beverly Park Road at 112th Street SW and traveled south through the WSDOT intersection at State Route 525 and along the City of Mukilteo’s portion of Beverly Park Road. During 2008, Snohomish County constructed improvements to Beverly Park Road between Picnic Point Road and 148th Street SW to match the city of Mukilteo’s improvements to the north.

The 52nd Avenue West improvements will follow the same design. Federal funding has recently been secured for this project. Construction is currently scheduled to begin during the summer of 2013 and will extend through 2014. There are likely to be single-lane closures during construction; pedestrian access will be maintained along the corridor. The project team is coordinating with the school district and Community Transit.
