Edmonds Community College recognized for culture of wellness

Edmonds-CC-logoFor the third year in a row, the American Heart Association has named Edmonds Community College a Gold Fit-Friendly Worksite for creating a culture of wellness in the workplace. The award puts the college among an elite group of awardees for this initiative.

“We are extremely honored and excited to be recognized by the American Heart Association’s ‘My Heart. My Life.’ initiative,” said Barbara Pardo, program coordinator for Edmonds CC’s LiveWell program. The program assists students, employees, and their family members in making voluntary behavior changes that reduce health and injury risks, improve health consumer skills, and enhance individual productivity and well-being.

Being recognized at the gold level means that Edmonds Community College:
– Offers all employees physical activity support,
– Provides a number of healthy eating options,
– Promotes a wellness culture, and
– Embraces at least nine criteria as outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, and culture.

The college said it exceeded all requirements, and is the only institution of higher education in Puget Sound to have achieved gold status. In addition, Edmonds CC won first place among colleges and universities in the 2010 and 2011 Governor’s Health Bowl.
