Two-term Edmonds City Councilmember Strom Peterson announced Wednesday that he is running for the Washington State House of Representatives. Peterson, a Democrat, will seek to replace 21st Legislative District Rep. Mary Helen Roberts, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Citing his reputation as a champion for environmental protection, public safety and preserving Edmonds quality of life, Peterson said he would like to expand upon these issues in the legislature. “We need smart investments in our schools, transportation infrastructure, and economy to protect and preserve what is best about our region, our cities and neighborhoods,” he said.

“The state has an obligation to get serious about funding our schools, and partisan gridlock preventing transit, ferry and roadway improvements is simply unacceptable. I look forward to bringing my experience as a progressive consensus builder and voice for small business to Olympia where I can help craft lasting, needed change.”

Noting that “economic strength, smart transportation planning, and environmental responsibility go hand in hand,” Peterson said he sees opportunities “at the state level to adopt policies that position Washington for long-term job growth, and an improved quality of life.”

Peterson said he also hopes to carry on the work of retiring Rep. Roberts, who has emerged as a champion for child welfare and education.

“We are all grateful for Mary Helen’s unflagging advocacy for kids, here and across the state,” Peterson said. “I look forward to doing everything I can to build upon her legacy—and making strides toward providing every child the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe, nurturing, environment.”

Peterson and his wife Maria Montalvo own the Cheesemongers Table restaurant in downtown Edmonds.

The 21st Legislative District includes parts of Lynnwood and Everett, most of Edmonds and all of Mukilteo.
