For the month of July, Gallery North is proud to present “Chasing the Night Sky”, by astrophotographer Kuria Jorissen. Running from July 1st – 31st , the exhibit is open to the public daily from 11-5.
Kuria Jorissen is an award winning astrophotographer who has been taking pictures of the night sky for over a decade. Often traveling to far off wilderness areas, Kuria does most of her work at midnight to 4am. Astrophotography involves a lot of learning and overcoming foiled attempts of capturing the wonders of the night sky alongside the elements of mother nature. Kuria studies new techniques for capturing and editing photos, astronomy, and works to research and share the lesser known stories of the stars.
Graduating from The Art Institute of Seattle with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art Photography, Kuria explored astrophotography during her thesis. Combining her passions for the camping under the stars and photography, she discovered her perfect niche. Kuria is truly in her element while working under starlight and is often told that once she is in the ‘zone’, it doesn’t matter how cold or late it gets, she could be out all night simply fueled by the beauty of her surroundings.
Through her work, Kuria seeks to share the stories beyond the well known Greek Constellations and to bring people to the moment in the wild—to show them the beauty of what lies outside the city lights. She also seeks to educate and encourage preservation of our natural lands and dark skies.
There will be a “Meet the Artist” reception on Thursday, July 7th from 1-4, and during Art Walk on July 21st from 5-8 pm.
