What does it mean to be a “real” man? Traditional definitions include adjectives like tough, strong, independent, and unemotional. To act otherwise is considered to be “wimpy.” Like many guys growing up in this culture, I unconsciously and consciously accepted the traditional male stereotype. However, over the years as I have raised 3 children, I have come to understand that what is needed to be a good dad is often the exact opposite of the “real man” stereotype. The more I embrace my “wimpiness,” the better dad, husband and person I become.
