Members of the world-famous Nordic Fiddlers Bloc (NFB) will teach music workshops on Sunday, October 9. The trio is comprised of Kevin Henderson, an explosive fiddler from the Shetland Islands, Olav Luskengård Mjelva, highly respected tradition bearer from Norway, and gifted fiddler, Anders Hall from Sweden.
Kevin plays fiddle with several groups, including the legendary Boys of the Lough. Anders plays regular fiddle, hardanger fiddle, and viola, and he’s an expert on both Swedish and Norwegian folk music. The Hardanger fiddle, or hardingfele, is a centuries-old Norwegian instrument with drone strings and an unmistakably unique sound. Olav plays regular fiddle and hardanger fiddle. In 2010, he received the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy award for his debut solo album, and in 2011, he was awarded the title of Norway’s folk musician of the year.
NFB has dazzled audiences in Europe, Australia, Japan and the U.S. with its energetic folk music, incredible arrangements, and wonderful harmonies. Each musician brings strong musical traditions from his homeland to the group, and when they play together, something magical occurs.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and teaching sessions start at 10:00 a.m. Sessions are open to musicians from any genre who are comfortable with their instruments and have experience learning by ear. Participants may choose from 6 workshops during the day. Two sessions run concurrently during each of three time slots. The fee for one session is $35 for adults ($25, if under 18 years of age), or take a full day of sessions for $60 for adults ($40, if under 18).
