South County Fire provided more details on its response to a fully-involved house fire east of Lynnwood on Wednesday night.
According to South County Fire spokeswoman Leslie Hynes, the fire was reported at 8:08 p.m. by a woman who told 911 dispatchers her adult son called and said he was suicidal — and was setting fire to the abandoned house where he had been staying in the 19900 block of Locust Way. Neighbors also called 911 reporting flames visible from the house
The house was fully engulfed with flames through the roof when firefighters arrived. Fire crews were directed to stage until Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies could secure the scene due to concerns that the occupant could pose a threat to firefighters. Once the scene was secure, firefighters attacked the fire from the outside because the roof had collapsed and the structure was unsafe to enter.
Deputies searched the area for the man who had reportedly threatened to set the house on fire. He was located about a mile and a half from the house and taken into custody.
The fire heavily damaged home. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office was scheduled to return to the fire scene during daylight hours to continue the fire investigation.
