Fire forces evacuations at Swedish/Edmonds Hospital

Many emergency vehicles responded to Swedish/Edmonds Thursday night.

An electrical fire in a sub-basement at Swedish/Edmonds hospital Thursday night forced fire crews to evacuate patients after smoke rose to the ninth floor through a stairwell, said Leslie Hynes, a spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1. Other patients were being kept in shelter-in-place — with no evacuation necessary — on other hospital floors. This included a group of infants in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

There were no known injuries as a result of the fire, which was first reported at 7:10 p.m., Hynes said. The cause is not yet known, she added. FIrefighters from Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Shoreline responded, and private ambulances were also standing by in case they were needed, she said.

According to Hynes, firefighters had to cut power to some of the hospital floors to prevent additional smoke from being generated by the electrical problem.

When the fire alarm sounded, a group of about 30 patients were moved from the ninth floor, which provides mental health treatment, to the hospital parking lot, said Swedish/Edmonds spokesperson Steve Kaiser. There were also some patients moved from floors affected by smoke to the cafeteria, Hynes said.

According to Kaiser, some patients were being evacuated to Providence Hospital in Everett.
