Gallery: Kids show their need for speed during box car race

The Lynnwood Rotary planned and sponsored a soapbox derby-style race on Sunday morning for their annual Challenge Race event to benefit local special needs children.

Children with developmental disabilities rode in the cars as “co-drivers” alongside kids who had been trained as “drivers.” All drivers and co-drivers received a t-shirt and participation medal.

The cars were loaded onto a special platform with gates holding them on an incline. The gates were lowered and the car would race down with the power of gravity down a long track.

Afterwards, the cars were connected to ATVs to be brought back to the starting line.

The event also included a Community Transit double-decker bus for children to explore, Cinnabons to snack on and an open fire truck for kids to look at.

The races included two heats of eight races each in the back of the Lynnwood park and ride, located at 20100 48th Ave. W.
