A dog died in a fire that caused more than $18,000 damage to a home in Edmonds just after midnight.

The fire was reported at 12:07 a.m. at a split-entry house in the 23400 block of 94th Avenue West. Three of the five adult residents were home at the time of the fire. “One resident was up playing video games when he heard a whooshing sound, then saw smoke coming from a heating vent. He alerted the others and they were able to safely escape,” said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1, which provides fire and emergency medical services in Edmonds.

Firefighters from Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Shoreline responded and had the fire under control in 10 minutes. While a dog perished in the fire, none of the residents was injured. “Firefighters made a quick stop and were able to keep the fire contained to one bedroom on the lower level of the house,” Hynes said.

Smoke and fire damage left the house uninhabitable. Red Cross responded to assist the residents.

A fire investigator determined the cause of the fire was electrical.
