Visitors of all ages descended upon the downtown Edmonds fire station Saturday morning as Snohomish County Fire District 1 showcased the emergency medical services it provides to the community.
Saturday’s open house was timed to coincide with Emergency Medical Services Week, and served as a reminder that more than 80 percent of the 911 calls that Fire District 1 responds to are medical emergencies. In fact, all Fire District 1 firefighters are certified as either emergency medical technicians or paramedics so that they can respond to medical calls as well as fires and other emergencies.
Many children brought their “injured” stuffed animals to be examined by medic unit firefighters, who applied bandages and cervical collars to their patients. Assisted by firefighters and volunteers, youngsters donned child-sized fire gear and scrambled up the steep steps of fire trucks.
Both adults and children also received instruction on hands-only CPR.
The Fire District staffs 12 fire stations that serve nearly 200,000 residents in Brier, Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace as well as unincorporated Snohomish County.
