Local students walk to help needy children

The kids at Hazelwood Elementary have spent this month walking so that disadvantaged children can have shoes.

The fundraiser was the brainchild of P.E. teacher Scott Boyce. He leads a popular running club at the school called the “Running Eagles.” Kindergarten through 6th grade students can choose to spend lunch recess walking or running laps around the school. Kids who make it 100 laps get to attend a special party, and those with 200 or more laps get lunch with the principal.

This year the staff wanted to give the runners a little extra incentive. Scott called around to local businesses and asked for their support. Aldercrest Auto Rebuild, Lynnwood Children’s Dentistry and the Mountlake Terrace Little Caesar’s each agreed to donate one cent for every lap completed in May. All of the money raised will be donated to Clothes for Kids, a Lynnwood-based charity that provides spring and fall wardrobes to low-income children.

“There are a lot of kids who have told me they are just running to help give shoes to kids who need shoes! It’s been a pretty special month,” Boyce told us.

Great job, kids!
