Healthy Beauty and Skin Care: On with the glow

You’ve been vigilant about using SPF in the rays, cleansing your face after workouts, and lightening up on your products for summer. The result: a healthy, sun-kissed glow that feels as good as it looks. Now, how to maintain that wholesome look as the months wear on? Here are some dos and don’ts to keep the radiance going…

DO continue using sunscreen…

So you’ve got a “base” and now you’re safe. Not true, says New York dermatologist Jennifer Stein, M.D. Technically speaking, a tan actually means your skin is already damaged…this is not the time to invite even more trouble. “A tan may give you a little bit of protection, but you can still burn,” she explains. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher—on face and body—is a continued must, even on cloudy days.

DON’T apply makeup over flaky skin…

It’s one thing to reach for bronzers and blushers to enhance your newly sun-kissed complexion. It’s another thing to attempt to smooth those products over skin that’s dry, flaky, or peeling from a few too many hours in the rays. A better bet: Use a good exfoliating tool or product each day to create the smoothest canvas possible, and then bring on the faux glow.

DO hydrate—even when it’s not blisteringly hot…

“Without adequate water intake, skin appears duller, and wrinkles and pores more prominent,” says Rachel Nazarian, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Make your goal 10 eight-ounce servings of water per day, spacing them out over a period of hours so your body can actually absorb the hydration.

DON’T even look at those tanning beds…

“There’s a myth out there you should tan before going on vacation because it will protect you from getting burned. That’s just not true. Also, the tan you get from a tanning bed doesn’t protect you. It’s a different kind of tan because it’s from high amounts of UVA, which darkens the skin quickly,” explains Dr. Stein.

DO fake a tan…

From moisturizers stocked with gradual self tanners, to liquid bronzers that glide on effortlessly, and gently-gilded powders that hint at a day in the sun, there are plenty of ways to create the look of a tan without exposing your skin to damage. Just remember to avoid a heavy-handed approach; after all, the most sophisticated glow is a subtle one.
