Police say the man who tried to start his hotel room on fire last week believed Satan was in his room.
According to a police report obtained by Lynnwood Today, the 52-year-old man had been staying at the Days Inn on 196th Street SW for about a month. He had been asked to leave Friday morning after making an offensive remark to the hotel manager. The fire was started shortly after that.
Police say the suspect used a lighter to set fire to blankets and curtains in his second-floor room. The hotel’s sprinkler system extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived. Detectives later found lighters and lighter fluid in the room.
The suspect told police he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone and was only trying to protect “the good people.” He’s facing a charge of first-degree arson. Police say he has an extensive history of mental illness.
