June Students of the Month: Lynnwood and Meadowdale

Lynnwood High School

Kimiam Waters-LHSStudent Name: Kimiam Waters
Mother’s Name: Cynthia Sapp
Father’s Name: Kimbal Waters
GPA: 3.855
Clubs & Activities: I am currently involved in peer mediation, FFA, and I am the current president of the robotics team and the founder and president of the Science Olympiad team. I was a member of Hi-Q for three years and FCCLA as well as key club for one year.
ASB: I am not directly associated with ASB, however, I do assist in school projects and assemblies through my participation in the leadership class.
Athletics: While still a contentious topic of discussion, I wholeheartedly subscribe to the belief that robotics is, in fact, a sport–a sport of the mind.
Honors: If this section is referring to my classwork, I have taken honors classes since Freshman year.
Awards: AP Scholar Award, two Engineering Inspiration awards, four industrial safety awards, Costco Diversity Scholar, FRC Dean’s list nominee, Rotary Youth Action Award nominee.
Community Service: I founded a tutoring program called S.I.T. (Student Interdisciplinary Tutors) that’s currently located at Cedar Valley Community School. We started in December of 2015 and concluded in May 2016. The program intends to help elementary students who received a two or below on their math SBA develop their skills in math while building a mutually beneficial relationship between high school tutors- all six of which are from Lynnwood High School- and the twelve elementary school pupils. I coordinated the first annual Royal Care Month where members of Lynnwood High School’s robotics team participated in 24 community service events in the month of February. We volunteered at a variety of locations such as Food Lifeline, the food bank, Woodland Park Zoo, we also picked up 60 pounds of trash around the LHS campus in the course of five days. For the past five summers, I’ve volunteered as a summer math tutor for the Summer Math Program where I tutored kids first through 12th grade in math, obviously, and also reading on some occasions. Lastly, I worked with a fourth grade class at Lynnwood Elementary School for several months.
Significant School Project: In my freshman year, I began working on a school garden to promote the healthy eating initiative spearheaded by Michelle Obama and to create a new source of revenue for the school as we would sell the produce. A project entailed more work than I had anticipated and after several years, unfortunately, a garden is still absent from our campus. However, FFA came about as a result of other students showing interest in the project. Hopefully, a school garden is on the horizon. I also founded the Science Olympiad team to open an opportunity for students to explore or engage their interest in STEM. Lastly, I created a program called Team Match on the Royal Robotics website that serves as a tool for high schools to find local robotics teams. This will hopefully connect schools without robotic teams with local teams that can mentor them in the creation of their own team. Ultimately, it’s meant to spread robotics around the state.
Future Educational Goals: My time with robotics has solidified my passion for public health. I intend to earn a master’s degree in public health at the University of Washington and eventually a Master of Science in Public Health.
Future Career Goals: Ultimately I would like to work for the CDC as an epidemiologist for infectious diseases, but I will begin this journey as a state epidemiologist.
Anything else we should know? I would also like to communicate my appreciation for the staff who nominated me for this honor. It’s their patience, sacrifice, and dedication that enable their students to succeed and allowed me to accomplish what I have in the past few years.
