A heart-breaking goal in extra time of the second half by Michael Winter gave the Vancouver Whitecaps a 3-2 victory over the North Sound SeaWolves in a Premier Development League game Friday night at Edmonds Stadium.

The loss was the fourth in a row for the SeaWolves, who dropped to 0-5-1. Vancouver improved to 4-3.

“It’s unfortunate,” SeaWolves coach Ed Moore said. “For long stretches we had them pinned back and we created good chances. But it’s those little things that kill you.”

The SeaWolves, playing their first home game since the May 18 season opener, held the lead for much of the second half behind goals from Zach Hammond and Nick Hamer but a 70th-minute strike by Harry Lakhan from 20 yards out into the upper right corner tied it for Vancouver.

Strong play by SeaWolves keeper Keegan Rogers kept the game tied through the end of regulation but in the final minute of added time, Cam Hundal passed to Winter wide on the left wing and Winter drove toward the center, finishing between Rogers’ legs for the game-winner.

“Both teams fought hard,” said Hamer, who had his first goal of the season. “We were the better team for most of the game so it’s frustrating to have it end like that.”

Vancouver took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Hundal finished off a counter attack. Nine minutes later, Hammond took control of a loose ball in the goal box and scored for a 1-1 tie.

In the 56th minute, Hammond handled the ball on the right sideline and crossed in to Hamer, who stretched to one-touch a shot into the net for North Sound’s lead.

“It was a great build-up,” Hamer said. “We had a lot of one-touch passes. Their defenders didn’t see me coming in and Zach made a great pass.”

The SeaWolves will try to break their losing streak but it won’t be easy as they had back on the road for a match on Friday at Victoria. The SeaWolves return home on Friday, June 21 against Victoria.

“I can’t ask for much more from these guys,” Moore said. “We are battling, we have very competitive guys and good guys who want to battle. We’re right on the cusp, we just need to cut out the mistakes.”
