Rep. Marko Liias (D-Edmonds) has taken the first step toward a possible run for U.S. Congress. Today he announced the formation of a congressional exploratory committee in the 1st Congressional District, currently held by Rep. Jay Inslee.
“In the past few months, many people have asked me to consider running for Congress in the 1st District, in the event Congressman Inslee does not seek reelection. While there are many things left to sort through, I want to let you know I am seriously considering this possibility,” Liias said.
He cites concerns about the Republican majority in Congress as central reasons for exploring a candidacy.
Members of the exploratory committee include Snohomish County Labor Council President Darrell Chapman, Rep. Derek Stanford (D-Bothell) and Snohomish County Councilwoman Stephanie Wright (D-Lynnwood). Liias says he won’t make a formal decision until Inslee announces his own plans for the 2012 election.
Liias has served as a state representative from Snohomish County since 2008.
