The Lynnwood girls basketball team, the defending Class 3A state champions, started its spring/summer basketball season by capturing the 2015 Snohomish Summer Basketball tournament June 7 at Snohomish High School.

The Royals defeated Blanchet 52-47 in the championship game and posted a 5-0 record during the three-day tourney. Lynnwood also beat Monroe (51-36), Kentridge (62-25) and Jackson (65-27) in its three pool play games. The Royals blew out Skyview (Vancouver) 55-17 in their semifinal game after racing to a 35-2 halftime lead.

In the championship game against Blanchet, the team that placed third in the 3A state tournament, Lynnwood led 26-24 at halftime in a closely contested game. The Royals return eight varsity players from the state championship team, including four of the team’s five starters.

Lynnwood will next play in the 2015 Edmonds School District Summer Shootout tournament on June 12-14. The Royals have won that tournament the past three years and are aiming for a fourth straight title.
