A colorful yarn display has mysteriously appeared on a sculpture near Lynnwood City Hall.

The legs of the Lee Kelly sculpture (more commonly known as “the elephant”) have been wrapped with crocheted and knitted yarn, and nobody knows who did it.

Yarn bombing is a type of guerrilla art using yarn instead of spray paint. Yarn installations are usually temporary, easily removed and are intended to reclaim public spaces.

Lynnwood joins the ranks of other yarn-bombed cities in the Pacific Northwest. Last year, Edmonds was yarn bombed with creations installed on light poles and the central fountain. Seattle’s Occidental Park was also hit last year.

The second annual International Yarn Bombing Day was celebrated this year on June 9.
