By her own admission, Kaelyn Stanton isn’t that great of a singer.

But thanks to Edmonds Music4Life, Stanton will be making beautiful music for the 2013-14 school year.

The Lynnwood High School sophomore was awarded the 2013 Pelland Trumpet during a meeting of the Rotary Club of Edmonds Tuesday at the Edmonds Conference Center.

The recipient is selected annually by secondary school music teachers in the Edmonds School District on the basis of talent and long-term interest in studying music.

“This is exciting,” Stanton said. “I feel really honored to be chosen.”

Stanton, a member of the Lynnwood High School Band, will have use of the Pelland Trumpet for the school year. It will be re-acquired by the Music4Life organization next spring for any repairs and other maintenance. Stanton will be eligible to receive it again next year as long as she is enrolled in the Edmonds School District.

The Pelland Trumpet is a performance-level a Bach Stradivarius instrument donated to the Music4Life program by Micaela Pelland of Lake Forest Park.

Stanton has been playing the trumpet since the fifth grade. She previously played the clarinet.

“I wanted to switch,” she said. “I thought it would be cool to be the one girl trumpet player.”

Trumpet players generally are male, Stanton said.

Stanton enjoys being able to play all kinds of music with the trumpet.

“I like being able to express my favorite types of music,” she said. “(Playing the trumpet) is another way to bring music to the world without singing.”

Students definitely benefit in many ways from music education, according to Stanton.

“It’s important. It helps students figure out how they should be dedicated to something,” she said.

Musicians are part of a team, Stanton added. They are individual players but also are part of a band.

“Other band members rely on you to do your part,” Stanton said.

“Kaelyn is a member of both our top honor’s–level wind ensemble and our top jazz ensemble at Lynnwood High School,” Lynnwood Band Director Phil Onishi said. “We very much appreciate the opportunity to participate in the Edmonds Music4Life program.”

Music4Life acquires musical instruments, gets them repaired if needed, and provides them free of charge to participating school districts for use by elementary-aged students of low income families.
