Lynnwood Lifestyle: February is the month for Sweethearts

February – the month for Sweethearts finds “Lynnwood Lifestyles” celebrating our community’s many generous volunteers and business-based sweethearts.

Visitors Information and Alderwood Manor Heritage Association Heritage Park
19921 Poplar Way

Last month I visited Heritage Park, which depends on the kind-hearted contribution of many volunteers to make this location a welcoming venue for historians, school outings, and tourists.

Dorothy Morehouse was on duty at the South Snohomish County Visitor Information Center and Wickers Museum during my January visit. I couldn’t have hoped for a nicer welcome!

Dorothy attests that she has always lived in Lynnwood. Her father, born in the mid-west in 1918, moved out to what was then known as “Alderwood Manor” before Dorothy was born. He worked as an electrician, making a one-hour each way Interurban (trolley) ride to his job as an electrician on First Avenue in downtown Seattle. Like most of her contemporaries Dorothy attended Edmonds High School (now Edmonds Center for the Arts). Dorothy is a long-time regular volunteer at the Heritage Park Museum and a wonderful museum historian.

This past week I returned to Heritage Park for the purpose of visiting the Alderwood Manor Heritage Association and was greeted by Elizabeth Lunsford who introduced me to Betty Lou Gaeng, author and volunteer. Although Betty Lou and I are columnists for the same news network I had not previously had the joy of meeting the woman who writes the “Looking Back” column for Lynnwood Today.

Betty Lou is the author of two books: “Etched in Stone,” which is the history of the Edmonds Museum memorial monument, and “Chirouse” about a Catholic missionary priest who came from France to Washington Territory in 1847 and became a father figure and friend to the Puget Sound area’s Native people.

Betty Lou lists the Snohomish County Women’s Legacy Project among her many interests.

Like most people for whom the Benjamin Franklin saying applies, “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it,” Betty Lou is also accepting media interviews!

Here she is in a recent KUOW radio interview https://kuow.org/post/fighting-traffic-dreaming-light-rail-outside-seattle. Listen in!

Betty Lou joked that she believes she landed the interview because she is among the oldest of Lynnwood’s historians – but I believe she landed the interview because everyone pointed the reporter, Joshua McNichols to one of Lynnwood’s best known sweethearts.

Friends of the Lynnwood Library
19200 44th Avenue

Another set of community minded valentines are the Friends of the Lynnwood Library volunteers. The friends established themselves in 1979 and do so many things to support the library, promote its programs, organize the art gallery exhibits and see to the “physical enhancements” of the library.

For 35 years now these civic-minded individuals have worked to raise money supporting library programs, services, artwork and physical enhancements to the library.

The Lynnwood Library is a showcase facility and, going forward, will often be used as the staging site for our “Fashion Flash!” feature. So don’t be surprised if you stop by the library and are asked by a Canon wielding columnist for YOUR photograph!

Radiant MedSpa
Dawn Hunter, DC LME
18415 33rd Ave. W.

For several years now Dawn Hunter, owner of Lynnwood’s Radiant MedSpa, has provided complimentary cosmetic consulting and services to burn victims and cancer survivors in addition to beauty services to her client base.

Hunter, who has been in the medical spa industry for the past seven years, is an active sponsor of the Pink Gene Foundation which was established by Tera Martin, one of Dr. Hunter’s patients featured in this video https://youtu.be/nyjXw2UFkwo

Hunter “helps women in all stages in life through positive transformation both physically, cosmetically and educational.”   And that’s why she is a “Lynnwood Lifestyle” sweetheart picks for Valentine’s Day.

If you have someone you would like to introduce to Lynnwood Today as a Sweetheart to the Lynnwood community, its schools, or service organizations please leave a comment at the end of the column.

We’d love to hear from you!

Lynnwood has quite a line-up for its February community calendars. “Lynnwood Lifestyle” will offer some activities in brief, and others in detail. There will always be an information link to the community resources that are offered in Lynnwood Today.
