Lynnwood Rotary honors Scriber Lake High School’s Bowker, Cliff and author Ricks for Write to Right program

RCL president Debbie Bodal, rotarian John Niemi, principal Kathy Clift, author/teacher Ingrid Ricks, teacher Marjie Bowker and rotarian Bob Fuller.

Scriber Lake High School teacher Marjie Bowker and principal Kathy Cliff and author Ingrid Ricks were honored and recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Club of Lynnwood on Thursday. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

The three were honored for their work in the Write to Right program in which students face and move on from their past experiences through stories.

By writing and sharing their stories, students are coping with their past and sizing up their future. With the support of Cliff, the program was started by Bowker. Teaming up with Ingrid Ricks, Hippie Boy author, the program expanded. Cliff will be retiring at the end of this school year.

The Write to Right program consists of three elements:

  • It uses narrative writing to help youth bring their stories to life while learning the fundamental elements of strong storytelling,
  • It helps interested youth publish their stories in group anthologies that are distributed internationally via both eBook and paperback.
  • It facilitates readings, presentations and stage performances that enable youth to share their stories in different mediums — strengthening their voice while connecting with others and initiating dialogue that fosters understanding and change.
