Lynnwood Transportation Benefit District’s Proposition No. 1 measure trailing in initial vote count

my newsThe Lynnwood Transportation Benefit District’s Proposition 1 measure is trailing after the initial vote count in Tuesday’s General Election.

Proposition 1 would authorize a 2/10 of percent increase in the sales tax to fund transportation improvements. As of 8 p.m., Tuesday, the ballot measure was being rejected by 51.42 percent (1,849) to 48.58 percent (1,747). The next vote count is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Edmonds City Councilmember Strom Peterson was comfortably ahead in his bid to represent the 21st District for the Position 1 in the state Legislature, and Edmonds resident Jeff Scherrer was trailing Lillian Ortiz-Self in the 21st District Position 2 race. In the 32nd District, Lake Ballinger neighborhood resident Alvin Rutledge was also losing to his opponent, incumbent Ruth Kagi, 65 percent to 35 percent.

The District 21 covers portions of southwest Snohomish County and includes Mukilteo, portions of Edmonds and Everett and areas north of Lynnwood. The 32nd District represents portions of southwest Snohomish County and includes Lynnwood and Woodway, and parts of Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, as well as Shoreline.

In Snohomish County general election results posted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Peterson — a Democrat running for Position 1 — had 10,072 votes, or 60 percent, to 6,694 votes, or 40 percent, for his Republican opponent Allen McPheeters.

In the Position 2 race, Scherrer — a Republican — received 6,956 votes or 42 percent, compared to 9,693 votes (58 percent) for Ortiz-Self of Mukilteo, a Democrat who was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Marko Liias. Liias, a Democrat who also was winning over his Republican opponent Dan Matthews, now holds Paull Shin’s 21st District Senate seat after being appointed to fill it following Shin’s retirement.

There were no surprises in the 32nd District, where incumbent State Sen. Maralyn Chase was comfortably ahead in early returns over her Republican opponent Robert Reedy of Mountlake Terrace, 65 percent to 34 percent. Rep. Cindy Ryu was running unopposed. All three 32nd District representatives live in Shoreline.

The 1st District incumbents in the Position 1 and 2 races both appeared to be on their way to reelection. Rep. Derek Stanford, a Democrat, was ahead of Republican challengers Mark Davies 57 percent to 43 percent in the Position 1 race. In the Position 2 race, Luis Moscoso, a Democrat, was beating Republican Edward Barton 52 percent to 47 percent.

Another Edmonds resident, Municipal Court Judge Doug Fair, was running unopposed for South County District Judge Position 3. Incumbent Judge Jeffrey Goodwin was winning over attorney Brett Nagle 58 percent to 41 percent for South County District Judge Position No. 2.

For Congress, two Democratic incumbents — 2nd District Congressman Rick Larsen and 7th District Congressman Jim McDermott — were also winning easily.
