Madrona K-8 School will be closed both Wednesday and Thursday to allow for the completion of air quality testing in the building following a fire in the staff lounge Sunday night.

The school district has contracted with Hawk Environmental Inc. for air-quality testing. Edmonds School District spokeswoman Debbie Jakala confirmed that the testing will last through Thursday, necessitating that the school remain closed.

The Sunday night fire caused more than $250,000 damage. No one was inside the building and there were no injuries. Firefighters from Snohomish County Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Shoreline were able to keep the fire contained to the faculty room, but the adjacent school office and the section of hall just outside the school office and faculty room had smoke and water damage.

Fire investigators determined the blaze started in a storage space off the faculty room. They were unable to pinpoint an exact cause, but noted there was nothing suspicious about the fire.

The school is located in Edmonds but draws students from across the Edmonds School District.
