The Edmonds School District said Thursday afternoon that Madrona K-8 school, which suffered $250,000 in damage due to a fire in the staff lounge March 27, will remain closed from now through spring break, which starts next week.

Officials originally thought the school might reopen this week, but air quality testing results received Thursday showed low-level fumes and vapors from equipment and products used during fire clean-up, said district spokeswoman Amanda Ralston.

These included “very low levels, traces of exhaust fumes that most likely were coming from the equipment being used to dehumidify the building, as well as trace amounts of vapors from products used for cleaning following the fire,” she said.

Since the school will be closed next week for spring break anyway, a decision was made to resume classes after the break — on Monday, April 11.

“The equipment being used to dehumidify will be removed by this weekend and the district will use spring break to air out the rest of the building,” Ralston said, adding that students will not have to make up the five days lost due to the fire.
