Meadowdale Middle School vocal music teacher Kathy Miller has been recognized by the State of Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) as its Middle School Teacher of the Year.

Miller was honored at the Department of Washington VFW Mid-Winter Convention for her ongoing efforts to promote American history, traditions and its institutions, teach and reinforce citizenship education topics, and promote democratic values and beliefs. Her name will be forwarded to National VFW where she will compete for national honors.

Miller was nominated by her Assistant Principal Joseph Webster and was sponsored by VFW Post 8870, Edmonds. She was previously named District 1 Teacher of the Year, which qualified her for Washington State consideration. Miller was selected for this honor from nominees submitted by VFW Posts throughout the state.

Miller devotes countless hours to organizing and producing her school’s annual Veterans Day assemblies that are moving tributes and expressions of appreciation for all of those who have served in our nation’s armed forces. Local veterans are invited to the assemblies, which feature personal testimonials, student essays and poetry, visual displays, and original musical productions. She is described by her supervisors as a positive role model for her students, whose testimonials include comments such as, “You have made a major impact on my life” and “because of you, I learned to sing from my heart”.

Miller and her husband Eric live in Edmonds. They have three daughters and one grandson.
