It’s the only safe way to make it across the railroad tracks to the beach, but it was closed in November due to issues with fish passage. The Snohomish County Parks Department recently reopened the tunnel, according to the Everett Herald:
People used to be able to walk over boards along the bottom of the tunnel. The creek flowed through a gap underneath and fish had no trouble getting through.
In November, sediment built up under the boards and made the channel almost impassable for fish. County workers removed the boards, allowing gravel and sand to go through — good for fish, but uncomfortable for people forced to slosh through several inches of water.
The county initially closed the tunnel as a safety precaution, but opened it again a few weeks ago with signs about entering at your own risk.
