Looking to return to the regional round of the WIAA state baseball playoffs for the first time since 2013, the Meadowdale Mavericks just needed just one more victory to get to this year’s tourney. Unfortunately for the Mavs, they would have to get that win in a matchup against one of the best teams in the state, the Arlington Eagles.
The Eagles, who had their season-long, 21-game winning streak snapped last week, got back into the win column on Wednesday with a 4-3 victory over the hard-charging Mavs in a District 1 3A Baseball Tournament winner-to-state, loser-out game played at Arlington High School.
Arlington built a 4-0 lead after five innings with some timely hitting and a strong effort by starting pitcher Owen Bishop. But with a berth to state on the line, the Mavs weren’t ready to give in, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning with a Luke Hunnewell RBI single and a two-run single by Finn Wendt.
While the Mavs made the game close with their sixth-inning hitting, the comeback came up short as the team stranded Wendt on first base to close the frame and then went down one-two-three to Eagles’ reliever Jack Sheward in the seventh to end the game.
The 4-3 defeat to the Eagles almost matched the score between the two teams in the District 1 3A Baseball Tournament winner-to-state, loser-out game between the two squads last year — a 5-4 win for Arlington.
The Mavericks end their 2019 campaign with an overall record of 12-11.
