Last year at Everett Memorial Stadium, the Meadowdale Mavericks baseball team was defeated in a district tourney loser-out game after leading by four runs in the seventh inning.
On Saturday at Everett Memorial, the team yielded six runs in the sixth inning, enough to propel the Everett Seagulls to an 8-4 victory in a District 1 3A Baseball Tournament quarterfinal game.
Mavs’ pitchers hit three Seagull batters, committed a balk, and gave up three hits (a single, double and triple) in the fateful sixth. Everett was able to break open a tight game with the big inning, take an 8-2 lead into the final frame and then coast to the win.
Coach Bill Hummell conceded that the sixth inning doomed his team on Saturday.
“I thought out kids competed great. That’s a good ballclub (Everett) there; they really swing it well and we competed with them great. We just didn’t make the right pitches in the end and they swung the bats better than we did,” Hummel said.
After a Nick Mavdesich double and Jon Murphy single to lead off the Everett half of the sixth inning, the Seagulls scared up a run on a squeeze bunt executed by Eyler Anderson.
Then pitcher Parker Cumberland hit two Seagulls to load the bases. He was replaced on the mound by Cutter Buchea, who hit Caden Lockhart on his first pitch to force in a run. Buchea then surrender a three-run triple to Aaron Robertson and the rout was on.
Cumberland had taken the mound in relief of Mavs’ starter Casey Toler in the sixth.
“Parker Cumberland’s just been lights out on the mound for us,” Hummel said. “I think he’s given up one earned run in 20 innings pitched this year — it’s like video game numbers.
“Baseball, from time to time, is just going to give you things that you don’t see very often and here was another example of that,” Hummel added.
With the loss, Meadowdale moves into the consolation side of the district tourney bracket and will face the Lynnwood Royals in a tournament loser-out game on Tuesday, May 7. The winner of the Mavs-Royals matchup will play the next day against the winner of the Snohomish-Oak Harbor game for a spot in the state championship tournament on May 8.
