Meadowdale bounced back from Tuesday’s 3-0 loss by defeating Glacier Peak 10-4 Wednesday in the second game of a three-game Wesco 3A South baseball series at Meadowdale High School.

Neither team had a hit until the bottom half of the third when the Mavs sent 15 batters  to the plate and scored 10 runs. Kenley Ackerman hit a two RBI single to put the Mavs up 2-0 and then two more runs came around when he hit a grounder with the bases loaded to third baseman Branson Barnecut, who overthrew the catcher. After that, the score was 10-0.

The Grizzlies got back three runs in the top of the fourth and then tacked on another in the fifth, but could not generate a rally against relief pitcher Garrett Walsh. Starting pitcher Moises Valadez picked up the win.

Valadez retired the first three batters he faced easily; he punched out Ray Rude to end the inning. Starting pitcher Sam Wyatt also sent down the Mavs 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Ty Deckwa got on base with a two-out walk but Jacob Lundin struck out to end the top of the second. Wyatt had no such issues and got a quick inning in the bottom of the second. Valadez was not to be outdone and retired the next three batters he faced in the top of the third.

And it came to be the bottom of the third. It started with a tough ground ball from Jacob Hunnewell that went underneath shortstop Rude’s glove and into left field. Collin Costello followed with a single. Brett Schaefer laid down a bunt that Wyatt got to and then tried to throw out Hunnewell at third, but Hunnewell beat the throw and the bases were loaded. Ackerman smacked a two run single to right field to score Hunnewell and Costello and runners were at first and third with nobody out. During Dakota Barlament’s at-bat, Schaefer was caught in a run-down and tagged; Hunnewell advanced to second on the play. Barlament knocked a single to right and then stole second and both runners were scoring position with one out. Justin Ridley brought them both home with a two run single to make it 4-0. Parker Coffey walked and both he and Ridley stole bases to put runners at second and third for Walsh. He made the most of the situation by knocking a single that scored both runners, making it 6-0. Phil Thomas got a single to follow as well and the Mavs completed their bat-around.

Hunnewell drew a walk his second time up in the inning to load the bases for Costello. He walked as well to score Walsh and then Schaefer walked as well to follow. That set the score at 8-0 Meadowdale. Ackerman had the bases loaded again for his second time up and though he didn’t technically bat in two runs, two runs did score after he hit a grounder to third baseman Barnecut. Barnecut’s throw went over catcher Colton Bunt’s head and Hunnewell and Costello scored to make it 10-0. Finally Wyatt got out of the inning by getting Barlament to ground out and Ridley to fly out. The Mavs led 10-0 at the end of three.

The Grizzlies got three back to avoid a 10-run mercy loss in the top of the fourth. Austin Hines and Rude walked to lead off the inning and Hines was brought home on an RBI single by Barnecut. Dylan Peterson hit a double to center field that scored both Rude and Barnecut, but Neill was thrown out at third when trying to stretch the double into a triple. Valadez quickly got the last two outs of the inning, but the score was 10-3 after the top of the fourth.

Kyle Umperovitch came in relief of Wyatt in the fourth and got the 4-5-6 hitters to go down 1-2-3. Glacier Peak scored their last run of the game in the top of the fifth: Bunt and Chris Watkins led off with singles and Ryan Ober reached first on an error, loading the bases with no outs. Hines hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 10-4, but Valadez got out of the inning by getting Rude and Barnecut to pop out. Hunnewell led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, but Umperovitch retired the next three batters easily. The score was 10-4 going into the top of the sixth.

Walsh came in as relief for Valadez in the top of the sixth. Deckwa hit a one-out single and Bunt and Watkins walked to load the bases with two outs, but Ober grounded out to end the inning. The Mavs failed to add any insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth despite getting three runners on base. In the top of the seventh, the Grizzlies got runners on second and third with two outs, but Deckwa flew out to end the game.

With the win, the Mavs improve to 6-2 in the league and 8-3. After the loss, Glacier Peak goes to 3-6 an 3-9. The two teams play the third and final game of the series at 4 p.m., Friday, April 18 at Glacier Peak High School.
