Taking advantage of a non-league contest in the middle of the season, Lynnwood Royals’ Coach Pablo Mummey put together a somewhat unusual lineup of regular starters, backups and a few junior varsity players for his team’s Saturday night game against the Bothell Cougars.
“We were trying to get more of our players that don’t get a lot of minutes on the field – we were trying to get them some time out there,” Mummey explained.
The coach’s plan paid off in two ways: playing time for the bench and JV players, and a solid win for the team.
Lynnwood defeated the Cougars 3-1 Saturday on the rain-soaked field at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell.
Regular starter Omar Salcedo, wearing extensive padding on his left wrist due to a non-soccer-related injury, scored a pair of goals to give the Royals a 2-0 lead just before the midpoint of the first half. The senior forward beat Bothell goalkeeper Spencer Haney with a low drive at the 11-minute mark, then pounded a shot into the goal from the middle of the 18-yard box in the 19th minute.
Bothell cut Lynnwood’s lead to 2-1 late in the first half when Sione Sasouvanh crossed a ball into the box where teammate Gabriel Grigoryan got a foot on it at the far post and directed it in the netting.
JV forward Santiago Camacho scored the final goal of the match when, on a breakaway, the freshman slid a low shot off the left goalpost and into the goal for Lynnwood.
Royals’ goalkeeper William Juarez-Ramirez made six saves in the match, his best coming in the final minute when he charged out to confront Grigoryan in the box and stopped a hard, low shot with his right foot.
Mummey like the play of Juarez-Ramirez on Saturday. “I thought he made some really good saves tonight,” he said.
Lynnwood, now with an overall record of 7-3-1, has five matches remaining in its 2019 regular season schedule — all against opponents with above-.500 records in Wesco League play. The Royals’ face Shorewood (7-2-0 in the 2A/3AWesco League South Conference) on Tuesday, Apr. 16, followed by Archbishop Murphy (4-3-2), Edmonds-Woodway (6-1-2), Cedarcrest (5-4-0) and Meadowdale (7-2-0) before District 1 3A tournament play begins on May 2.
